Excerpts of an email exchange between Salma Omar and  OC Rear Admiral Rakesh Chopra [Rocky]

I have an email in respect of Col Omar Ali Khan who passed out from BCS in 1946 from Rivaz as a House prefect. Could you please put the mail on the website and ask if anybody remembers the OC.
Thanks

Dear Rocky,

Apologies for taking so long to get back to you. My father has again been unwell but I managed to talk to him a bit about his BCS days. Here are some of the facts, I will add to them as I find out more.

My dad (Col Omar Ali Khan) studied there till 1946. He began studying at Bishop Cotton Bangalore, then moved for 2 years to St Joseph's Academy in Dehra Dun and finally to Bishop Cotton Shimla.

He did Senior Cambridge (O levels) in 1946. He says that there were 4 houses - Ibbestson, Rivaz, Curzon and one other. He was in Rivaz House. He held school colours in boxing and hockey from 1944 to 1946. He says that the School Captain during his final years was somebody called "Agha" - a nephew of Yahya Khan belonging to an elite Afghan family. The Headmaster at first was Reverend Skinner and then Reverend Drake. Both went on to become Bishops. He also mentioned Mr Papworth as the music teacher - my father really looked up to him. Other names I remember of his school fellows are Plunkett, Purdey and, of course, Dr Humayun Khan who was a year junior to him. He remembers that the Viceroy used to visit the school on at least 3 occasions - annual cricket match, school play and prize distribution ceremony.

He still has photographs of the quadrangle and other parts of the school. In time I will dig them and see if I can scan them and send them to you also. Hope this helps somewhat. When he has a bit more strength, I will press him for more information.

May father mentioned that he was House Prefect of Rivaaz in 1946. Also mentioned an English teacher Keith Percy and a fellow student  Iftikhar Sahibzada who was the same year as him at BCS.

Hope you are well and many thanks, once again, for the school tie. My father loves showing it off to all his visitors. Thanks for bringing a bit of his past back to us.

Salma
